The Queen’s University Belfast as Summer School 2023 provides international students with a three-week introduction to Northern Ireland’s rich tapestry of historical, cultural, political, environmental, and socioeconomic factors. This experiential programme will place Queen’s, Belfast, and the north of Ireland in the midst of the major conversations that shape our world.

Why Queen’s University Belfast Summer Program?

According to overseas education consultants, Queen’s University Belfast 23 offers insights into the histories, locations, and future visions of Belfast and this part of Ireland through interactions with locals and visits to a variety of political, historical, and cultural sites. You will learn about our city and travel around the country with students from other international universities from all seven continents.

School Experience with Queen’s University Belfast

Week 1:

This course includes core content and is required of all students on the summer programme; following this introduction, you will design your own summer school experience from our selection of one- or two-week thematic strands.

Week 2 & 3:

Create your own Summer School experience by selecting from a variety of unique programmes.

WEEK 1

  • 19th – 23rd June 2023
  • Belfast: Culture, Identity, History, and Politics
  • Academic Lead: Professor Dominic Bryan

Week 1 will investigate the city’s intertwined social, political, and historical realities, as well as various community perspectives on modern Ireland/Northern Ireland. Students will understand the various ways we can use and interpret the past by the end of this week, as well as the differences between various discipline-centered conceptions of the past. We will give students a new or improved understanding of Queen’s University Belfast and its history in the Belfast metropolitan area. Students will be guided through a campus orientation and will have the opportunity to meet with key members of staff and students who will be delivering the summer 2023 programme. Students will be introduced to Belfast and will visit Derry-Londonderry.

WEEKS 2 & 3

  • 26th June- 7th July 2023

Students will have the opportunity to delve deeper into their chosen theme in weeks two and three, both within and outside of the classroom. They will explore multiple perspectives on real-world issues such as rural regeneration, the climate crisis, socioeconomic inequalities, conflict, peace, and extremism through projects, design challenges, and engagement with local communities, political decision makers, businesses, and non-governmental organizations, and consider various transformative solutions to addressing these locally and globally.

They can select one 2-week programme or two 1-week programmes from the options listed below.

Fees and Entry Requirements

Summer School Fee: £2495 to include:
  • Tuition fees are non-refundable.
  • Accommodation with a bathroom
  • Welcome and farewell dinners
  • Excursions in the field
Summer School Entry Requirements:
  • Prior to summer school, you must have completed at least one year of university/college study.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.7 or higher is required.
  • A reference or referral contact from the global education/study abroad office or a professor is required.

We are delighted to collaborate with the US-UK Fulbright Commission to provide a limited number of scholarships to US students attending our International Summer Schools at Queen’s University Belfast. The Fulbright Commission seeks applications from students from diverse backgrounds who have had little opportunity to immerse themselves in a different culture.

Students should begin preparing as soon as possible before beginning their studies. This should give them enough time to get everything ready for their arrival at Queen’s University Belfast.

If you choose the accommodation option, you will be housed in Queen’s University Belfast new student accommodation facility in Belfast City Centre for 21 nights. Check-in will be available beginning on Saturday, June 17, 2023.

The new BT1 and BT2 residence halls opened in the fall of 2018 and are only a 15-minute walk from Queen’s main campus (0.9miles). You’ll be close to the city’s vibrant nightlife, popular restaurants, and local supermarkets. You will be in the midst of a fantastic coffee culture, with some of Belfast’s most popular independent coffee shops nearby.

Applications will be accepted beginning in early November. Because programmes fill up quickly, we ask that you submit a first and second preference choice. Our team will do everything possible to place all students in their first-choice programme (s).
