Kudremukh is located in Chikkamagaluru Karnataka with the name is kept because of its structure at the side of the mountain when seen from a certain view resembling a horse’s face. And hence the name was given ” Kudremukh “.You can also visit triund trek.

OVERVIEW:

You can also enjoy the Kadambi waterfall, Tunga river, and lush grassland by passing through hazy valleys and  Bhadra river flowing through grasslands. Historical caves are present which are also centers of attraction as you can see images of Goddess Bhagwati and Varsha that are 1.8m high within the cave. 

How to reach the Kudremukh trek starting point 

So to reach there first you have to leave for Kalasa village from where Kudremukh entrance point is 10 km. And then from the entrance point to Mullodi, a village which is again 15 km from Kalasa. Reaching Mullodi village on your own is not quite easy so you have to hire a jeep from the entrance point. In Mullodi village you have to reach the forest office where after taking permission you can start your trek to Kudremukh peak. And reaching Kalsa village is also quite easy as public transport is easily available from nearby towns, cities, or Bangalore.

From forest office to Ontimara 2

Trekking distance – 5km 

Trekking duration- 2 hours 

  •  Make sure to reach the forest office as soon as possible. As your starting point will be from the forest office you have to start early around 8:00 am to gain a better experience. And before leaving take permission from the forest officials. 
  • As you head to the summit from the Forrest office after some distance you will hear sounds of waterfalls. And that’s a refreshing start for your trek to witness Somvathi falls. 
  • As you move ahead you will enter a forest trail with dense vegetation and very diverse flora and fauna You can also spot wildlife like Malabar civets, wild dogs, sloth bears, and spotted deers. Or even the endangered and rare species lion-tailed macaque if luck favored you 
  • Going deeper into forests you can also observe small water streams or waterfalls. Which then will lead you to Ontimara surrounded by a very wild and dense canopy.
  • Ontimara -1 is followed by a flat trail whereupon once you reach you can witness Kudremukh valley to your right and astonishing green mountains on your left. 
  • After an hour and a half, you will reach Ontimara – 2 

Ontimara -2 to the final stretch 

  • As you reach Ontimara path follows from a gentle sloppy area to a steep ascent. When you look around and wherever far your eyes reach, it would be rolling green hills. 
  • During the monsoon, the ground might be a little wet and slippery. For that, you must carry a trekking pole. 
  • And after a few minutes of moving ahead, you can locate the peak just in front of your eyes. 

From the final stretch to the peak

  • And the final stretch section is all about watching the peak of Kudremukh from the back and following the trail that leads to the peak
  • There will be a boarding sign once you are just a few minutes away from the peak.
  • At the top of Kudremukh, the weather will be windy and even can be cloudy or misty. So it might be a little hard to capture the 270-degree view of uneven greenery. But if the weather is clear you will be lucky to capture it. 
  • And if you started trekking at 8:00 am you may reach the peak at noon. And make sure to start descending by 2:00 pm. 

TAT should be at 2 pm 

It will take 3 hours to descend and you should not spend much time there. Upon returning, the forest section might be a little slippery so make sure to use the trekking pole.

Tips and precautions 

  1. Make sure to carry all the necessary items like first aid, scarf or cap, some high-calorie snacks, electrolyte powder, and other necessary items.
  2. You must carry trekking poles as forests might be more slippery during the rainy season.
  3. Carry some plastic wrap sheets to wrap electronic devices.
  4. Identity Card 
  5. Make sure to not disturb the wildlife in case you see any. 
  6. Make sure to leave the peak early so that you reach it before sunset. As the forest area might be quite dangerous and after 6 pm forest officials put restrictions to move in or out
